Hail and Your AC: What Calgary Homeowners Should Check After a Storm

A homeowner in Airdrie called us the morning after a July storm last year. His AC had been running fine before the storm. Afterward, it wouldn’t cool the house properly. He assumed the storm had damaged something internal.

Damage was external. The condenser fins on the outdoor unit were bent flat across roughly a third of the coil surface. The unit was still running, still producing refrigerant flow, but with a third of its heat rejection capacity blocked by crushed aluminium. It was working hard to do a job it could no longer do efficiently.

Calgary sits in one of the most active hail corridors in North America. That fact matters directly for outdoor AC equipment.

What Hail Does to an Outdoor AC Unit

The outdoor unit, called the condenser, contains thin aluminium fins wrapped around copper refrigerant tubing. Those fins are what allow the unit to reject heat from your refrigerant into the outside air. They are also the most exposed and most fragile part of the equipment.

Hailstones as small as 1.5 centimetres will dent and flatten condenser fins on impact. Larger stones flatten sections completely. A unit that takes a serious storm straight on can lose 30 to 60 percent of its effective coil surface in one event.

A partially blocked coil still runs. The compressor still cycles. The thermostat still calls for cooling. But the system has to work harder to reject the same amount of heat, which drives up electricity consumption and puts added stress on the compressor.

Inspecting Your Condenser After a Storm

Checking for hail damage takes about five minutes and requires no tools.

Power the unit off at the disconnect or breaker before getting close. Then look at the fins around the outside of the unit from all sides. Hail damage shows as flat crushed sections where the fins no longer have their original corrugated profile. The pattern usually follows the exposed faces, so whichever direction the storm came from typically shows the most damage.

Run your fingertip lightly across the fins. Undamaged fins feel like a regular comb. Damaged sections feel crushed flat. Severity ranges from minor denting on 5 to 10 percent of the surface to full flattening across most of the exposed face on a direct hit.

Also check the top of the unit. Hail falls vertically and direct hits to the top panel can dent the housing, though that is a cosmetic issue rather than a functional one.

    Repairable vs Replacement

Minor to moderate fin damage (under about 25 percent of the coil surface) is repairable with a fin comb. A fin comb straightens individual fins back to roughly their original profile. It does not restore them to factory condition, but it recovers most of the lost airflow. This is a technician job — working on fins without knowing what you’re doing bends adjacent fins and makes the problem worse.

Severe damage across more than 30 to 40 percent of the coil, or damage that includes kinked refrigerant tubing, typically warrants replacement. Kinked tubing can restrict refrigerant flow or fail later. A condenser that has lost that much effective surface area will run inefficiently even after fin combing.

Age matters too. Repairing a 12-year-old condenser that was already approaching end of useful life does not make economic sense if a moderate storm hit it hard. The repair cost applied toward a new unit is usually the better call.

    Insurance and Hail Claims

Most Calgary homeowners’ insurance covers hail damage to HVAC equipment. The outdoor condenser is typically covered under the same provision as roof and siding damage. Coverage depends on your specific policy, your deductible, and how the insurer categorizes the damage.

Document everything before any repair or replacement work starts. Photographs of the damaged unit from all angles, preferably with the damage clearly visible, support the claim. A written assessment from an HVAC technician identifying the damage and the repair or replacement recommendation is the other piece insurers typically require.

Calgary Air Heating and Cooling Ltd provides written hail damage assessments for insurance purposes. The assessment covers which sections of the coil are affected, whether fin combing is viable, and the estimated impact on system efficiency and compressor longevity.

    Condenser Guards and Hail Protection

Hail guards are aluminium or steel cage-style covers that sit over the condenser and take impact in place of the fins. They are not standard installation and not required, but in high-hail areas of Calgary and surrounding communities they are worth considering after a claim.

A guard does not eliminate damage on a direct hit from large hailstones, but it significantly reduces fin damage on the more common small to medium hail events. Payback is straightforward for any homeowner who has already filed one hail claim on HVAC equipment.
